Darrell Davis

For Texan Darrell Davis, sculpting wildlife was an easy choice.  ?I?ve always liked animals, maybe because I?m an only child - they were my brothers and sisters.  There are so many different species that I never got bored".

He never really liked art classes, but he had a change of heart after visiting South Carolina?s Brookgreen Sculpture Gardens at 15.  ?I remember seeing the big aluminum horses out in front of the garden and thinking they were pretty incredible. It took me longer to walk around them than anyone else, and I knew then that?s what I wanted to do".

He studied fine art at the University of Texas at Arlington, followed by graduate courses in landscape architecture. ?All the old sculptors were also architects.  We studied architecture and sculptors, and I learned a great deal about design and composition".

Before starting a sculpture, Darrell researches his subject, often visiting the Dallas and Fort Worth zoos and the nearby Fossil Rim Wildlife Park to see animals in action.  ?Often the animal will hit a position that just clicks and I think it will look nice sculpturally".

He has been participating in Sculpture In The Park, in Loveland Colorado for the nine years.

Darrell will also be in the annual benefit for Brookgreen Gardens, Pauleys Island, South Carolina.
