Toland Sand's Biography

Toland Sand was born in Berkley, California in 1949. Though his family moved in 1954, he always felt at home when the family returned to Carmel Valley. Toland spent five years in Greece, attending high school in Athens and traveling as much as possible. He graduated from Colorado College in 1971 with a degree in Philosophy. An innovator in the use of dichroic glass and polished crystal, Toland`s approach to his glass sculptures is one of exploration, always looking for form and energy. His perspective is one of trying to reveal an interior complexity while not forgetting simplicity and elegance of form. Access is given to the interior of the sculpture and then one can exit, just like an architectural form. Professionally, Toland has been creating glass since 1977. Working first with stained glass and then moving to glass blowing, he transitioned to constructed glass sculpture in 1985 and has been working full time in that medium ever since. He`s participated in the Venice Bienale and been nominated for the 1999 Living Treasure Governor`s Award for New Hampshire. Toland has completed many commissions, most notably for the CEOs of McDonald`s USA and Japan, as well as for IBM, Verizon, Coca Cola, Carpet Master and UPS. His work is also in numerous private collections throughout the world
